I aim to help students to develop their knowledge and insight of mathematics or physics to allow them to approach exam questions with confidence and to help them achieve the best outcomes possible.

About Me

I am a qualified teacher with a Postgraduate Certificate in Further and Higher Education, and over 20 years of experience helping students succeed in maths and physics.

My academic journey began at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, where I studied A-levels in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and further mathematics. I then earned a scholarship to Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, graduating with an honours degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in physics and theoretical physics. I later completed a PhD in laser plasma physics at Queen’s University Belfast, conducting experimental work at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford.

Before moving into education full time, I spent two decades in the UK nuclear power industry, developing robotic systems for inspecting and repairing nuclear reactors. I began teaching as an Associate Lecturer in science with the Open University, and went on to tutor maths and physics at colleges in Belfast and London. Most recently, I spent 10 years as a senior tutor at MPW College London, teaching A-level maths, further maths, and physics.

I now live in Canterbury with my wife Juliet (also a physicist!) and our cat Lucy. We have three grown-up children. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy tennis and growing jungle-style gardens.

Tutoring Services

  • Most tutorial sessions are of one hour duration, but longer sessions can be arranged if desired.
  • Tutorials can be either online via Zoom or, for local students, face-to-face at my home in Canterbury.
  • Most parents/guardians choose to pay by bank transfer, either after each individual session or monthly, although payment in cash is also welcome. If monthly, I will send an invoice detailing the sessions held during the previous month and what was covered in each session.
  • I encourage students to keep up regular sessions, but I realise that other priorities mean that sessions may sometimes need to be cancelled or rescheduled. If this is the case, just let me know by text or WhatsApp as soon as possible. I do not charge cancellation fees.
